The PA Army National Guard’s Bureau of Environmental Management (BEM) is committed to environmental excellence in supporting the missions of the PA Guard. The BEM extensive environmental programs managing issues ranging from endangered species to cultural resources to hazardous waste. Whether it is soldiers preparing for overseas deployments or training for State emergencies, the protection of the environment is a priority. In accordance with the Environmental Management System, and Sustainable practices the PA Guard’s environmental policy focuses on operating “The Right Way, The Green Way, All the Way”.  

BEM provides overall environmental program management. BEM is divided into three branches: the Compliance Division focuses on pollution control and compliance; the Conservation Division focuses on natural resource management; and the Planning Division focuses on long range planning, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Military Construction, and Environmental Performance Assessment System (EPAS). 

BEM’s Administrative Section oversees programs such as:

  • Environmental Management System (eMS)

  • Sustainability

  • Operational Noise Management

  • M-Day Operations
